What Is Invisalign® in Tampa?

Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that helps patients achieve a straighter, better-aligned smile. Instead of relying on metal components bonded to the teeth, Invisalign® utilizes clear aligners, similar to whitening trays.

Your Tampa dentist will create models of your current smile which will be used to create custom aligners that fit comfortably over your teeth. Every few weeks, you’ll receive a new set of aligners that will continue to help your teeth shift into their ideal position.

Benefits of Invisalign®

Some of the benefits of Invisalign® in Tampa include:

  • They’re just as effective as traditional braces
  • They’re discreet and virtually invisible
  • The aligners are very comfortable (no metal components to irritate your delicate oral tissues)
  • They require fewer dental visits
  • You don’t have to worry about getting food stuck in brackets
  • Treatment time is often faster (between 12 and 18 months for most patients)
  • You can remove them to eat
  • You can remove them to brush and floss your teeth
  • They can be used to treat various orthodontic issues, such as gaps, crooked teeth, crowded teeth, underbite, crossbite, etc.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Invisalign® in Tampa?

Good candidates for Invisalign® include patients with mild to moderate malocclusion. Patients with complex cases might need traditional braces and other orthodontic devices, such as palatal expanders and headgear.

Patients who need orthodontic retreatment are also good candidates for Invisalign®. In the past, these patients received orthodontic treatment (likely traditional braces), but their bite has shifted again. Most often, this is due to not wearing a retainer, which needs to be worn at night longterm once orthodontic treatment is complete.

Invisalign® is also a good option for patients with dexterity issues or those who aren’t likely to take the time to brush and floss around brackets and an archwire properly. We not only want you to have a straighter smile, but we also want you to have a healthy smile. Lack of adequate hygiene while in braces can lead to decay between the teeth and around the brackets, as well as gum disease.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Invisalign® Clear Aligners?

Patients who aren’t good candidates for Invisalign® include those who:

  • Have complex orthodontic cases
  • Are likely to lose their aligners
  • Can’t stick to the treatment schedule of wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours per day

How Does Invisalign® Work?

To begin, your Tampa dentist will complete a comprehensive oral evaluation to check for dental decay, gum disease, and bite misalignment. We want to treat any conditions (such as decay) before starting with orthodontic treatment. During this evaluation, your dentist will also determine whether you’re a good candidate for clear aligner therapy.

If you are eligible for Invisalign®, your dentist will use a 3D scanner and impressions to create models of your teeth. Based on those models, your dentist will create a treatment plan, and the Invisalign® lab will fabricate custom aligner trays.

You’ll receive between 20-25 sets of clear aligners during the course of your treatment, which will be worn sequentially to shift your bite gently over time. Each set needs to be worn for about two weeks. Your Tampa orthodontist will check your progress occasionally throughout your treatment duration.

Does Invisalign® Hurt?

Invisalign® is one of the most comfortable orthodontic treatment solutions available. Unlike traditional metal braces, you don’t have to worry about tissue sensitivity from rough metal brackets or painful pokes from a broken archwire.

Since the aligners are causing your teeth to shift, you may notice some gum and tooth soreness for a day or two after starting Invisalign®. You’ll experience this throughout treatment whenever you start wearing a new set of aligners.

For most people, the sensitivity is minimal. Warm salt-water rinses can help, as can ibuprofen (if necessary and approved by your physician). Eating soft foods can help, too.

Get a Beautiful Smile Without Sacrificing Aesthetics

When people think of orthodontic treatment, they often think of metal braces. If this visual causes you to cringe, don’t worry, you have another option. Invisalign® clear aligners can help you achieve a straighter smile without sacrificing your smile right now. You can go about life like normal, and no one will ever know you’re straightening your teeth in the process.
